Protection relays are an integral part of the Transmission Network. These intelligent electronic devices (IED) silently monitor the network and spring into action when an undesirable system condition is detected. Their main function is to initiate fast tripping of circuit breakers so that the faulted system is quickly isolated from the healthy network. This limits damage to the faulted equipment and reduces the possibility of damage to the rest of the network. At the same time it minimises the possibility of fire or explosion and limits danger to personnel and the public. It is imperative that protection systems are reliable and secure. They need to operate when there is an undesired condition in their zone and remain stable for all disturbances outside their protective zone. This is achieved by careful design of the protection system. An important part of this exercise is to have good understanding of the Power System and its response to fault conditions. Similarly, an understanding of the capabilities and the limitation of the protective relay is imperative in the provision of a reliable and secure protection scheme.
